Glossary of Stock Exchange Terms

Stock price
       
The current price of a stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The price of Industrial Alliance stock is updated on our website approximately every 20 minutes on trading days.
       

Net change
        
The change in the price of a stock from its closing price on the previous day to the most current price.
         

Previous close
         
The closing price at which a stock sold on the previous trading day.
         

Volume
        
The total number of shares of a stock that were bought or sold during a trading day.
        

Bid
        
The highest price that a buyer is willing to pay for a stock.
        

Ask
        
The lowest price that a seller is willing to sell a stock.
        

Day high
         
The highest price paid per share on a given trading day.
       

Day low
        
The lowest price paid per share on a given trading day.

52-week high
        
The highest price paid per share over the last 52 week period.
       

52-week low
        
The lowest price paid per share over the last 52 week period.
       

Outstanding shares
        
The total number of shares that have been issued by a given company and that are being traded publicly.
        

Market capitalization
        
The total value of issued and outstanding shares. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the number of issued and outstanding shares by the stock's most recent closing price.
       

Dividend yield
         
The proportion of yield a company pays out to its shareholders in the form of dividends over the last 12 month period divided by the stock’s current price.
        

Price/earnings ratio
        
The last traded stock price divided by the earnings per share. This calculation is based on the last four quarters of earnings as reported by the company.
