Automobile Insurance

Am I covered for the rental of a car or trailer?

You must advise your insurer if you wish to rent or borrow a trailer, a tent trailer or a car. You could add the QEF 27 endorsement to your policy to cover your responsibility for damages caused to a vehicle that you do not own.

If I use my car to travel to the United States during my vacation, do I have to inform my insurer?

If you plan to travel to the United States with your car, you must advise your insurer and ensure that you are adequately protection by:

  • obtaining collision insurance (if you don't have any). It is easier to file a claim request with your own insurer for damages caused to your car than to sue the party responsible for the accident in the United States;
  • increase your civil liability  coverage. For a small additional premium, the limit can be increased to up to $2 million. Remember that, contrary to the province of Quebec, where a victim of bodily injuries files a claim with the  Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), in the United States, an auto accident victim can initiate legal proceedings against you.

How do I add a driver (one of my children, for example) to my policy?

You must contact one of our customer service agents by (418) 650-4600 or 1 800 463-4382 . Do not forget that it is important that the names of everyone who drives your passenger car appear in your file. You must also identify the principal driver and occasional drivers. Note that there can be more than one principal driver for a same vehicle. Therefore, if one of your children uses your car to drive to work, he/she will also have to be declared a principal driver.

Am I covered if I use my car for work?

Yes, you are covered. However, in the event of a claim, the amount of your indemnity could be reduced if you have not declared this use to your insurer.

Your premium is based, among other things, on the use you make of your vehicle. If the insurer does not receive the premium that it is entitled to according to the type of coverage it provides, it can proportionally reduce the settlement you receive in the event of a claim (section 2411 of the Quebec Civil Code).

Am I covered if I drive another person's vehicle?

Under the terms of the "civil liability benefit" contained on your policy, your automobile insurance contract protects you as the driver of any automobile. Certain exclusions apply however, including:

  • if the vehicle is owned by someone who resides at the same address;

  • if the vehicle is furnished by an employer.

In these cases, you must be listed as a driver on the vehicle owner's policy.

However, civil liability does not cover damages that may be caused to vehicles that you do not own, such as a rented vehicle for example.

Such damages can be covered by an additional endorsement:  QEF 27 - Civil liability for damage to vehicles that are not owned by the insured. This coverage is available at a minimal cost and we recommend that all our insureds have it.

Is it true that automobile premiums are higher for a rented vehicle than a purchased vehicle?

The auto insurance rates of several insurers take into account whether a vehicle is rented or purchased. It has been shown that insureds who rent thir vehicle submit more claims and that rented vehicles are stolen more often, particularly at the end of the lease period.

Is my policy automatically renewed each year?

Your policy renews automatically on the expiry date, unless you or your insurer provide notice to the contrary.

Is the property inside my trailer automatically covered by my insurance?

It is important to note that the property contained inside your trailer or tent trailer is not covered by your automobile insurance, which only covers the trailer as a vehicle. The amount of property coverage you have under your home insurance plan should also include that contained in your trailer.

Should I report all my automobile accidents?

Quebec law obliges you to declare all accidents. If you omit to report an accident, your insurer reserves the right to check your file in the central file of insurers, which houses information on all claims involving Quebec drivers.

Home Insurance

What must I do in the event of damages caused to my personal property or home?

A police report is required in the event of theft or vandalism. Protect your property from further damage and store it until you receive instructions from your insurer. Locate invoices or other proof of possession of the damaged property.

What is the definition of depreciated value and replacement value?

The depreciated value of an article is established by taking into account various factors such as the item's age, use, normal lifetime and replacement value. The replacement value is the replacement cost or, if it is lower, the repair cost using new components of the same type and quality, with no deduction for depreciation. The replacement value applies only if your policy provides for such coverage.

How do I calculate the amount of insurance necessary to cover my property?

It is often difficult to evaluate the value of the property we accumulate over the years. We therefore recommend that you perform a  property inventory . To guide you in your evaluation, several insurers, including Industrial Alliance Auto and Home Insurance, estimate that the contents of a house represent half the reconstruction cost of the building. Hence, the contents of a house that costs $150,000 to rebuild would be evaluated at $75,000.

Should I advise my insurer if I make renovations to my home?

Yes. Regardless of the type of renovations made, you must advise your insurer, who will issue an endorsement for the duration of the renovations. Afterwards, the insurer will evaluate with you if the renovations increase the reconstruction value of your residence and recommend, where necessary, that you increase the amount of coverage.

Am I obligated to insure my home?

Although Quebec law obliges you to insure your car, even if it is not ont the road, you are not legally obligated to insure your home. However, if your mortgage is financed by the Industrial Alliance mortgage loans department or by another financial institution, the institution will require that you insure your home. Even a mortgage-free home should be insured. It only costs a few hundred dollars per year to protect your most precious asset, which is often worth many thousands of dollars.

Yes, as soon as a death is certified, you must advise the deceased's insurer, who will place the existing policy or policies in the estate's name. The deceased's property should be secured until it is sold or transferred to an heir.
