Foundation of Alliance Nationale
On the afternoon of December 11, 1892,
an important meeting is held in the basement of Saint-Joseph's Church
in Montreal that leads to the foundation of Alliance Nationale,
a mutual aid society. At this meeting, which is attended by 74 people,
Sir Hormidas Laporte, a prominent businessman and successful wholesale
fruit and vegetable vendor, is elected president of the new company.

Modest Beginnings |

Alliance Nationale's beginnings
are quite modest: each founding member contributes $100 to form
a common fund. The company begins operating with $10,300.
