1892
Foundation of Alliance Nationale

On the afternoon of December 11, 1892, an important meeting is held in the basement of Saint-Joseph's Church in Montreal that leads to the foundation of Alliance Nationale, a mutual aid society. At this meeting, which is attended by 74 people, Sir Hormidas Laporte, a prominent businessman and successful wholesale fruit and vegetable vendor, is elected president of the new company.

Modest Beginnings

Alliance Nationale's beginnings are quite modest: each founding member contributes $100 to form a common fund. The company begins operating with $10,300.
